You are correct, I read several articles which jogged my forgetful memory about pixel shape. The problem is that the video is captured with non-square pixels and displayed on a square pixel device. I still think the derivation setting needs to be changed on the archive though...

e.g.: My source DV files have a 16:9 aspect ratio but are 720x480 (SD widescreen DV) when the derivatives are made they need to use a non-square PAR (pixel aspect ratio) of 1.2 in order to preserve the correct display ratio of 16:9. This should be done by the derivative process by adding the "-aspect 16:9" argument onto the ffmpeg lines for widescreen DV video. This should not be a problem. The archive needs to add a source footage type of "DV Widescreen" which will add this tag onto all derivative generating ffmpeg commands and fix the problem.
